Google Home Max

The Google Home speakers light up to show when they’re listening, but sometimes they might be triggered on accidentally by something that sounds similar to the hotword. In addition to basic colors, popular smartphone skin producer Slickwraps offers vinyl skins for Google Home in various color selections with carbon, metal, wood, leather, glitz, stone and hemp patterns. While you can't configure the colors of the Google Home at the time of purchase, Google did make the fabric base that comes with the speaker removable.

Thanks to the addition of a front-facing camera, the Nest Hub Max essentially functions as a Nest Cam, providing peace of mind when you’re away from home. Tapping into the live feed using the Google Home app for Android, we’re given the option for two-way communication. For those worried about privacy, there’s a green LED that glows next to the camera to indicate it’s being accessed remotely, as well as a pop-up notification that appears on-screen. Now, if you’re paranoid that someone is watching you while at home, there’s even switch on the back that effectively turns off the microphone and camera. Yes, the Google Home Max was meant to satisfy those cravings, but the Google Nest Hub Max can certainly fill the void, too. The device is armed with dual 10-watt tweeters and a 30-watt woofer, allowing for substantially more power and making the Nest Hub Max perfect for all sorts of music listening.

Given the solid construction and the fact the Nest Hub Max is stationary, you don’t have to worry too much about things breaking down. In the unfortunate event it does, however, the device does come with a one-year limited warranty. New features and hotfixes will also roll out as the devices ages, providing new functionality and fixing potential software issues that might arise. Google wants the smart display to function as the centerpiece of your home, and as such, the Hub Max provides security, entertainment, home automation, and virtual assistance. It’s chock full of goodies under the hood, though, the now-traditional design makes it look like your typical smart display. I tested this by playing the song Havana by Camilla Cabelo at four different volumes . Then I played back a recording of myself saying “Hey Google” and played it from a separate speaker at distance of 5, 10, 15, and 20 feet. Sure, this isn’t the most scientific test ever devised but it does highlight how at higher volumes the microphones on the speaker have a hard time picking up voices.

Sensors and Microphones

If you mainly want background music, you should spend half as much on the Sonos One. Ty Pendlebury is a journalism graduate of RMIT Melbourne, and has worked at CNET since 2006. Video calling isn’t new for some Google Assistant-powered smart displays, but the Nest Hub Max takes it one step further. The new auto-framing feature will automatically zoom and track you, which means you don’t need to be sitting directly in front of the Nest Hub Max when handling video calls. The zoom and pans are subtle, but they do a nice job at keeping you in the frame when on a call. Having the freedom to move around while doing other things is, you know, useful when you’re trying to multitask.

Voice interaction with photos is available in most Google Assistant languages that work on your Nest display. To share the photo with one of your Google contacts, say “Hey Google, share this photo with ” and follow the prompts. If you have Voice Match enabled, you can also say “Hey Google, change Photo frame” to open Photo frame settings on your Nest display. If you like the idea of a smart speaker but also want Bluetooth so that you can bring the speaker with you when you go outside then you should check out the Sonos Move.

That’s been slowly getting better , but that’s not an issue at all with the Google Home Max. Setting it up is as easy as plugging it in and opening up the Google Home app. It’s very similar to how easy Sonos makes setting up with their app. The Google Home app walks you through step-by-step how to connect the speaker to your wireless router and get it ready for streaming. You should know that WiFi is mandatory as there is no ethernet input if you want to connect it directly to a modem.

This is good if you don’t feel like going through the trouble of EQing your music yourself, but not so good if you do because you won’t have that level of control. All you get is the basic bass and treble sliders in the Google home app. Karissa was Mashable's Senior Tech Reporter, and is based in San Francisco. Comes in three color options and Max in two , you can only buy the original in one configuration -- a chalky white top with a gray fabric base. But let's say you don't want to bother with separates and value the clean look of a single speaker.

That said, it sounded good even at low volumes and I ended up using it to play music in the background throughout the day as well. Google knew that if it was going to make a speaker of this size meant for listening to music, then it had to sound good. One way it decided to make that happen was by adding their own algorithms that allow the speaker to self-adjust its EQ depending on where you place it using six internal microphones.

Google says it's equipped the Max with a special AI-enable feature called "smart sound," which automatically detects the speaker's surroundings and optimizes its output based on what it picks up.

The same Ambient EQ technology that made on-screen photos on the Nest Hub resemble real-world prints is back, too. No other smart display is quite as convincing, which makes it wonderful way to showcase your most recent memories. Before taking the Google Nest Hub Max out of the box, the first thing that needs to be addressed is where it should be placed. Compared to the more-expensive Bose SoundTouch 30, the Max blew it away.
